WKST: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Have you ever wondered why Americans are
accused of using more energy and raw materials per
person than any other nation? Do you feel like you use a large amount
of energy or raw materials on a day
to day basis? For most Americans the answer is probably "NO".
Why this difference in how we perceive
ourselves vs. how the world sees us? One possible explanation is that
most of the energy and raw materials
consumed by Americans is spent INDIRECTLY. That is, energy spent in processing
the raw materials,
transportation both to plants and to stores, production at the plant,
advertising, sales, and delivery to the
home. When we buy a pencil we don't think of the energy required during
each step of the production of
that pencil.
1) For this worksheet you are to choose one "simple" product
(pencil, paper clip, pen, spiral notebook,
scissors, stapler, etc).
Name of Product = _______________________
2) List all the different steps needed to obtain the raw materials, make
the product, sell the product, and
deliver the product; and that had
to consume energy or raw materials.
3) Indicate where that energy or raw product went into your simple product.
SAMPLE: (imagine that
my product was a pencil)
RAW MATERIALS
ENERGY CONSUMED
WASTES PRODUCED
1. Cutting trees
gas & human
(chain saw)
carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, blades
2. Hauling trees
gas (trucks) & humans
(driver) carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
tires
3. Sawmilling trees

6. Shaping graphite

7. Glueing graphite & wood chemical, electricity, &
human heat, carbon dioxide, released chemicals
ETC……………
(NOTE --> Try to list a minimum of 20 different steps & feel free
to do research.)
